What the data indicates about Mildura
TYPES OF BUSINESSES The following two sections are based on data obtained from the Small Business Register (Australian Bureau of Statistics) covering the period 2001 It is obvious from the following table that the dominant industries in each of the rural sub-regions of Mildura fall within the ‘Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing’ category accounting generally for three-fifths of the businesses in each locality – a rate almost double that applying throughout regional Victoria. Red Cliffs stands a little higher and Irymple a little lower than the Mildura rural average. Mildura Central is: representative of the proportion of businesses classified ‘Manufacturing,’ ‘Wholesale Trade,’ ‘Transport and Storage,’ ‘Cultural and Recreational Services,’ across Victoria, exceeds the state-wide proportion engaged in ‘Construction,’ ‘Retail Trade,’ ‘Finance and Insurance,’ ‘Health and Community Services,’ and ‘Personal and Other Services,’ and has a lower proportion – substantially so – in ‘Property and Business Services,’ and perhaps surprisingly in the low volume area of ‘Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants,’ where the Mildura Central figure (0.79) is below that of Regional Victoria as well as Melbourne and Victoria:
